What is a Communication Impairment?

Communication is an exchange of ideas between two or more people. It is a dynamic dance of receiving information (listening to speech, watching body language, reading, looking at visuals, etc) and giving information (speaking, body language & gestures, writing, drawing, and using props).

Having a communication impairment means that a person has a breakdown in their ability to receive or give information. For example, if someone experiences a stroke and loses their ability to talk.

After acquiring a communication impairment, a person could benefit from speech therapy to help improve skills and/or find new ways of communicating.

Communication Access strategies refer to ways the person with the communication impairment and their communication partner give and receive information.
